Izzy's Champion won nicely at Musselburgh this afternoon, and despite still being a little babyish over his fences he travelled well into the race and galloped away after the last to register his first win. Still learning, he is one of our best work horses so hopefully he will progress further on the race track with time. He is owned by Margaret and Paul Winnell from the Isle Of Man and is named after their first grandchild, Izzy. She takes a huge interest in Champ's training and loves to hear progress reports from her Grandad on Sunday mornings; there is a good story to tell this Sunday.
It was also a satisfying win for Stephen and the team here including vet Eugenio who analysed Champ's last run when he pulled up and have been proactive to improve him, with a soft palate cautery and a change of routine at home and including plenty of work on the water treadmill.
We may have another small problem to solve following Emirat De Cantana's run as he hung badly and as a result did not jump with fluency. I have full confidence that we will get him back in shape and maybe over hurdles next time out.
Just the one runner at Haydock tomorrow with Vengeur De Guye reverting to hurdles. He is struggling over fences on his current handicap mark so we are trying hurdles on a five pound lower mark. He will love the heavy ground and he could be each way value.
