Exchequer Second At Musselburgh And A Sad Day Today

Exchequer stayed on strongly in the final two furlongs at Musselburgh on Saturday, just missing out on a win by a length but delighting us with his improvement. A straightforward chap with a determination to run on he should be up to winning for Gerry McGladery before the turf season closes.

We had a sad day today though as Gerry's noble chestnut Normal Norman broke his leg while turned out in the field. A flagbearer for Gerry and a dear horse to deal with, he had won on the flat, a bumper and over hurdles and was showing an aptitude for chasing. He loved Musselburgh and won the Hogmaneigh Hurdle there in 2019. He will be a loss to the yard and that loss keenly felt by his owner.

We have only declared two at Hexham where the ground is forecasted to be good. Shanroe Street made a solid return to the track when fourth at Cartmel and he should be better suited by this staying track. He is a likely type for the four miler round here later in the autumn.

Blooriedotcom won twice round Musselburgh last season, but was second here in a novice hurdle so he should handle the track. He is an enthusiastic type who will be pleased to be back racing.
