2017 Grand National Winner One For Arthur Is Retired

With mixed emotions, The Two Golf Widows and Lucinda Russell Racing announce that One For Arthur, the 2017 Randox Health Grand National winner has been retired;ย  we have decided to call time on the racing career of our much loved warrior.

We are immensely grateful for what Arthur has done for us and the journey that he has taken us on. It was a huge privilege to win the National for Scotland and the recognition and opportunity that he brought us and Scottish racing was tremendous.

There are so many in the yard and associated with us that have cared for and loved Arthur, but special mention to Derek, Erin, Ailsa, Jamie T, and Jaimie who have been at the forefront of his preparation.ย

Whilst the temptation was always to race him again we knew that there would be a time when it would be right to call a halt to his racing career. We are delighted that he is fit and well and will now retire to an active life and we wish him a happy and long retirement.

One of The Golf Widdows, Deborah Thomson said, ' Arthur has taken us on an incredible journey, one that we will forever be grateful to him for. He is a once in a lifetime horse with great presence and we are so pleased that he can look forward to a relaxing and enjoyable time post racing'

I think when Peter adopted Henrietta Knights butterflies in saying on Arthur's National win day "I just wanted to put him back on the lorry and take him home." This said so much about what this fella means to you all at the yard. Lucinda undoubtedly you can train horses but you are a lovely lady and like One For Arthur a true credit to our sport - thank you both.

What a star! On Open Days he knew that everyone adored him and he loved all the attention. He fully deserves a long and happy retirement after all the magic moments he has given to his owners, his team and all his fans.

Arthur is the horse of a lifetime for you all. His win in the Grand National, which had us all screaming at our televisions after the last fence, is a moment few who follow Scottish racing will forget. I'm so relieved he's retiring in one piece to be loved and admired for many years to come - in the field, in his stable and in whatever new career he embarks on. Happy retirement Arthur, and thank you.

Met you at Carlisle Linda, before covid, told you that I told all my friends to back One for Arthur to win the Grand National and when I saw Vicente making the mistake at the first in that race, I told everyone to bet him for the Scottish grand national, which he duly won as did Arthur for the National. Thank you for the memories David.
