Sterner Tests And Pre Perth

A week has gone past and with it, we have had some really progressive bits of work both by the horses, and getting the yard ready for the winter.

The main group of horses will be ready to run at the end of this month so we are adding some sterner pieces of work and including a gallop on the grass at Kilduff for each horse to see what stage they are at. Bradley has moved the fences back to…

Owners Lunch

The weather gods relented and gave us a beautiful morning for our annual owners lunch.

The Saturday open day was a lot of fun until the end when the marquee was wrecked, and I think that everyone here felt deflated and exhausted by Saturday night, unsure of where the next days guests were going to sit to have lunch. However, with a brighter morning and a bit of rejigging of the smaller…

BHS IJF Open Day 2019

We had an excellent turnout to the BHS IJF Open Day today, despite horrid rain to start then while the sun came out the wind picked up and caused havoc.

We hold this open day for a chance for people to meet the horses and staff but most importantly to give an insight to the yard and how we work to produce the fit, relaxed and winning racehorses.

Walking around the stables and discussing…

Last Week's Progress

A glorious weekend to round off a very busy week, and some work days to be proud of.

The majority of the winter horses have now had three pieces of work and yesterday we were delighted with the progress of each horse. There is still ground to cover and the horses will change shape again, but they are strong and moving well and we are where we want to be as we head into September. I think…

August? October?

More rain as August seems to have mistaken itself for October, but our horses are thriving and we are enjoying preparing the autumn and winter horses despite the necessity for waterproofs.

At Kilduff we are filtering through the early season horses as in batches they school over hurdles and fences and work on the grass gallops. The bread and butter work is carried out at Arlary but these…

BHS IJF Charity Open Day 31st August 2019

The British Horse Society, Scotland, is hosting our annual Open Day on Saturday 31st August.

In aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund and the BHS the day will give an opportunity to see around the yard, to meet the horses and staff and this year to watch the horses schooling on our new carpet gallop before a parade of a dozen horses to look out for this autumn and winter.

There will also…

Yard Update, Lots Of Action

August is always an exciting month as the pre trainers increase their work and start schooling in readiness for soft ground in the autumn.

With monsoon rain over the past week we have been able to both gallop and school on the grass, a good few weeks earlier than normal. Many of the horses are quite far forward and we should have a few new start runners at Perth and Cartmel over the next…

Well Above Par Share Sold

Well Above is a winning and placed chaser, rated 117 who has plenty of scope to progress further. He won easily at Hexham last December gaining an RPR of 127 then was second a week later running to the same level despite a welterweight. He is best on soft and heavy ground; conditions that were rare last winter, and he has returned from his summer break looking fabulous.

Oh So Close; Racing Results Bangor And Perth

It was a day of diminishing margins at Bangor today; Chanceiton running one of his best hurdle races to be second by a head, and Royal Reserve returning to form, thundering down the run in to be third by half a length.

Chanceiton had gone up in the ratings over hurdles after his chase runs and I had argued that it was too much only to have him dropped a pound. How I wish I had managed to…

Just The One At Perth Evening And Owner Communication

Just one runner at Perth tomorrow with Gripper looking to make amends for a below par run last time. He has had a great few weeks since that run showing some improved pieces of work, and while this is a novice hurdle rather than a handicap, he should run a better race.

Our form man Paul McIvor was here last week and we have been discussing more ways to increase owner communication. As well…
