We enjoyed a fantastic day yesterday with an across the card double courtesy of Engles Rock on the all-weather at Newcastle and Green Vault over hurdles at Bangor, Mark and Susie Russell’s charge leading home stable mate Sutton Manor to complete a 1-2 for the yard in the 2m7f handicap hurdle.
Once again ridden by conditional jockey Alan Doyle, Green Vault was able to run unpenalised following last Sunday’s success at Ayr and took advantage with the minimum of fuss, quickly asserting once jumping to the front at the second last. He has until next Friday to run under a sole 7lb penalty and so we’ll see how he is in the next few days and consider our options. A lovely staying chaser in the making, he was providing Mark and Susie with their 30th winner as owners.
We were also thrilled with the performance of Sutton Manor. Steered into second place by Patrick, who was returning to the saddle after a brief spell on the sidelines, this was another step in the right direction and we hope his winning turn isn’t far away.
Our Flat string, in the capable of hands of Steven Kelly, continue to go from strength to strength, with Engles Rock resuming winning ways in the 1m handicap at Newcastle late yesterday afternoon. Given an ultra-patient ride by Paul Mulrennan, she showed a fine turn of foot to quicken from last to first inside the final furlong, this success meaning she is now 2-4 over the straight 1m at Newcastle.
