Kelso Preview

We commence a busy few days racing at Kelso this afternoon with Corrigeen Rock the first of eight intended runners. A smooth winner of his only start in Irish points in the spring, Corrigeen Rock is an exciting prospect for this season and beyond and we’re hopeful of a bold show in the first division of the maiden hurdle. Without Conviction represents us in the second division and is one who has really strengthened up for a summer break. She takes on the boys in what looks the stronger of the two divisions, but can be given a solid each-way chance based on the form of her third over slightly further at the course back in April.

It would take a bit of a leap of faith to support Flutter Down from out of the weights in the 3m novice handicap chase, but he has always shown a bit of ability at home and you can strike a line through his last run at Hexham as he lost all chance with a bad mistake at the seventh.

Big River has been one of our stable stars for a number of years and he makes his return to action following a wind op in the feature Edinburgh Gin Chase. He has a fantastic course record, but we are conscious of the fact that this is his first run of the season on ground that is likely to be quicker than ideal with his main target being the Borders National back at Kelso at the start of December.

Spark of Madness ran a cracker when second at Perth on his recent reappearance and has good claims of finishing in the money once again in the 2m handicap hurdle, whilst Vengeur de Guye bids to repeat his 2019 victory in the 2m handicap chase. He hasn’t won since, but he has fallen in the weights as a result and showed he still retains plenty of ability and enthusiasm when runner-up at Perth last month.

Royal Reserve has been lightly raced in recent years, but he is a talented horse on his day and is capable of running better than his odds suggest in the 2m novice handicap chase before Stylish Moment rounds off the day in the conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle. A recent recruit, we’ve given him a wind op and are going back over hurdles and back up in trip for his stable debut and are sure to learn plenty more about him this afternoon.
