Musselburgh Magic

We enjoyed a fabulous afternoon at Musselburgh yesterday with a double courtesy of Diamond State and Izzy’s Champion. There was also a creditable third from Emirat de Catana on his return to fences with Red Missile running well for a long way to be fifth in the 3m handicap hurdle.

The success of Diamond State was a notable one as it provided our 17-year-old conditional Conner McCann with a winner on his first ride over jumps. It was an extremely polished ride given his experience as he got Diamond in a lovely rhythm and the race was as good as over once he let him stride on from the third last. This was the perfect start to the season for both horse and rider and one they can build on in the months ahead.

It was also great to get Izzy’s Champion back into the winner’s enclosure, Champ appreciating a strong gallop dropping back in trip and displaying a wonderfully willing attitude to prevail by a short head in a driving finish. With both of his wins coming around Musselburgh, we’ll look to find a suitable opportunity for him back there in the near future.

Aiming to keep up the momentum, we send West End Lady down to Hexham tomorrow where she takes on nine rivals in the 2m4f novice hurdle. This is a stronger race than the mares handicap she won over course and distance last month, but conditions will suit and we’re hopeful she can finish in the first three or four.

We also have Praise of Shadows running on the Flat at Newcastle tomorrow evening. He should appreciate coming back in trip and returning to the all-weather, but he is a horse we are still learning about and is forecast to be an outsider in what looks a competitive race.
