Six Shots At Kelso

Kelso hosts its traditional post-Christmas meeting this afternoon and we are well represented with six runners.

We begin with Return Fire, who lines up in the opening 2m6f novices’ hurdle. A fine second over course and distance on his debut for the yard at the start of November, he ran another good race to be third in a competitive handicap at Aintree last time and has solid each-way claims once more.

Lucky Flight hasn’t been the easiest to predict, but he has a good record at Kelso and is more than capable of running well in the 2m handicap chase. He was placed over course and distance from a 5lb higher mark back in March.

We are doubly represented in the 2m novice hurdle, with Hector Master and Fethard Glory both returning from short breaks. Hector Master, who looked set to be placed until falling at the last on his hurdling debut at Perth in September looks the stronger of the two, with Fethard Glory probably more of a handicap prospect. However, both look to have their work cut out against the unbeaten odds-on favourite Soft Risk.

We also run two in the concluding contest, the 3m2f handicap chase for amateur jockeys. Both Buddha Scheme and Prince Dundee ran over 4m at Hexham last time with Prince Dundee faring best in second. Although yet to win away from Hexham, Prince Dundee has finished runner-up on all three starts over fences at Kelso and has a good chance of going one better. Buddha Scheme needs to bounce back having fallen at Hexham last time, but the soft ground will be in his favour and we’re hoping the switch of headgear – from cheekpieces back to a visor – will have a positive impact.

Mighty Thunder

Reflecting on Monday’s Welsh National, it just wasn’t meant to be for Mighty Thunder as he never travelled with any fluency and was eventually pulled up. The two false starts worked against him and the ground was also softer than ideal, so I think we can just put a line through the run. He has bounced back from similar displays in the past and I’m sure he’ll do so again.
